End of an Era: The Whittlesea Court House Visitor Information Centre to Close Its Doors.

After 30 years of service to the community, the Whittlesea Visitor Information Centre run by the Whittlesea Court House Association Inc. will sadly close its doors, on 22nd October 2026 bringing to a close a remarkable chapter in the history of one of the Whittlesea Township's most treasured heritage building.

The Association officially opened its doors on 19th October 1996 but its story began much earlier. The Whittlesea Courthouse operated as a Court of Petty Sessions until 1989 serving the local community for many decades. When the building was offered for sale some seven years later, a group of passionate local residents came together to advocate for its preservation.

The Whittlesea Court House Association Inc. was formed to lobby the City of Whittlesea to purchase this historic building (Circa 1864) and to protect it for future generations. Thanks to the determination and commitment to those early members, the City of Whittlesea Council purchased the property, securing its future and to prevent the loss of an important piece of local history.

Following the purchase of this building, it was carefully restored through a partnership between the Department of Employment, Northern TAFE and the City of Whittlesea. Their combined efforts restored the courtroom and other judicial features, preserving the building's historic character whilst also enabling its new life as a Visitor Information Centre and living museum, to celebrate the history of the Whittlesea Township and its surrounds.

For over the past 30 years, the Association has worked tirelessly to preserve, protect and celebrate the courthouse and the stories it holds. What began as a campaign to save a historic building evolved into a lasting legacy of community spirit, heritage, conservation and a celebration of the people, places and natural beauty, which makes this local area unique.

The Association's success has always been driven by its volunteers. Generations of members, have generously contributed their time, knowledge and skills to maintaining the building; researching local history; welcoming visitors; organising events and sharing the rich heritage of the district. Thousands of visitors have passed through its doors seeking local knowledge, maps, travel advice and historical information with volunteers proudly showcasing the people, places and stories which have shaped Whittlesea.

As the Association prepares to close its doors, members reflect upon with pride, on what has been achieved over the more than three decades. During that time, the way people access information has changed dramatically however as the rise of internet, smartphones, GPS navigation and online tourism resources, has transformed how visitors plan for their journeys and to discover their destinations.

Whilst these changes have reduced the need for traditional Visitor Information Centre services, they do not diminish the important role the Association has played in preserving its local history; promoting tourism and providing a welcoming gateway to the region. Whilst it is also difficult to say goodbye, there is comfort in knowing however that the Whittlesea Courthouse remains standing today because of a dedicated group of volunteers who believed in, that it was worth saving. Their vision, perseverance and commitment ensured that the important heritage, would continue to tell its story for generations to come.

The closure of the Whittlesea Courthouse Visitor Information Centre, marks an end of an era but not the end of its legacy. The building stands today, as a testament to the community spirit and to those who fought to preserve it plus to the volunteers who lovingly cared for it, over the past 30 plus years.

As we close our doors on 22nd October 2026, we extend our heartfelt thanks to every volunteer, member, supporter and friend who has been part of this journey. The Association may be closing its doors but the legacy of those who saved and cared for this Court of Petty Sessions building, will continue to inspire future generations and to also ensure that this important piece of Whittlesea Township’s history, is never forgotten.
